Why Farm-Grown Beats Bulk Imported Extract

If you pick up ten mushroom tinctures off a shelf right now, chances are that none of the ten companies behind them ever grew a single mushroom. Most functional mushroom products in the U.S. are made the same basic way: a company buys bulk extract powder, usually imported, mixes it into a base liquid, bottles it, and puts their label on it. The mushroom itself might have been grown, harvested, and processed on another continent, by people the label-owner has never met, using methods they can't fully verify.


We don't do that. We grow the mushroom. We're the ones who inoculate it, fruit it, harvest it, and carry it through a sixteen-week extraction. Here's why that difference actually matters — not just as a marketing point, but as a real difference in what ends up in the bottle.



The mycelium-on-grain problem


One thing worth knowing as a shopper: not everything labeled "mushroom extract" actually comes from the mushroom itself. A meaningful share of the bulk mushroom powder on the market is grown as mycelium — the root-like network a mushroom grows from — cultivated directly on grain like rice or oats, then the whole thing (mycelium, leftover grain, and all) is dried and ground into powder. It gets sold and labeled as a mushroom product, but a large portion of what's actually in the jar can be starch from the grain substrate, not the mushroom compounds people are paying for.


This isn't a fringe issue — it's a well-documented concern in the mycology and herbal supplement world, and it's part of why third-party testing and clear sourcing matter so much in this industry. We sidestep the question entirely: our tinctures are made from the actual fruiting body — the mushroom itself — that we grow and harvest ourselves. There's no grain substrate to separate out because there's no grain substrate in the extraction to begin with.



Traceability you can't get from an importer


Approximately 80% of the mushrooms sold and consumed in the U.S. are imported from China and Australia. When you buy bulk extract on the open market, you're trusting a supply chain you can't see: how the mushrooms were grown, what (if anything) they were treated with, how long they sat between harvest and processing, and how the extraction itself was done. Most of that is simply invisible once a product reaches a U.S. company's bottling line.


When we tell you our tinctures start as a mushroom grown from local mill sawdust, local straw,and spent coffee grounds — and go through a specific 16-week alcohol extraction followed by a 6-hour water extraction — that's not a sourcing story we're repeating secondhand. It's what we did, on our farm, this season. If a store or a customer has a question about any step, we can actually answer it, because we were there for every one of them.



Freshness has a shelf life too


Bulk mushroom extract can sit in warehouses and shipping containers for a long time before it ever reaches a U.S. bottling facility — and extracted compounds, like most botanical constituents, degrade over time and with exposure to heat, light, and air. A tincture made from extract that's already a year or two old when it's bottled is a different product than one where the mushroom was harvested, extracted, and bottled within the same growing season.


Our process, start to finish — grow, harvest, dry, extract, bottle — runs about four months.


That's not fast compared to buying pre-made bulk extract off a distributor's shelf, but it's fast compared to however long that bulk extract spent getting to market in the first place.



What this means if you're deciding what to carry or buy


For a store, an apothecary, or a practitioner deciding what to put on a shelf or recommend to a patient, "where does this actually come from" is a real question — and for most mushroom products, it's a hard one to answer with any specificity. For ours, it isn't. We can walk you through substrate to bottle because we're the ones who did it.


That's the whole case, really. Not that farm-grown is a nicer story than bulk imported — though we think it is — but that it's a fundamentally more verifiable, more traceable, and often fresher product. When you know exactly where something came from, you don't have to take anyone's word for what's in it.
